| Our Community Event 500 BAGS of LOVE ! January 15th, 2011 500 Bags of Love continues strong on its third year this January 15th with the support of corporate and media partners such as El Tiempo Latino, Telemundo, Viva 900, Radio Fiesta, Latin Opinion, McDonald’s, State Farm, supermarkets, churches, charitable organizations and many others. 500 Bags of Love is a community project helping families in need in the Washington Metropolitan area with boxes of food provided by ethnic food brands and supermarkets. 500 Bags of Love was launched in January 2009 by Elda M. Devarie, President and CEO of EMD Sales Inc., an ethnic grocery wholesaler and distributor. Ms. Devarie was motivated by her own experience as an immigrant and inspired by her belief that minority businesses should play an active role in the future of this nation through the economic and educational development of the communities they serve. This year, more than 600 families will receive a box with EMD Sales products and a $25 certificate for anything extra they want to purchase at the participating store as a complement of the “Bag of Love.” Families were asked to write their best wishes for their loved ones and for the New Year 2011. The letters and e-mails sent to El Tiempo Latino and the comments the charity organizations have received about the program share a common denominator: Family love and gratitude. In the words of Ms. Devarie, “I have lived many wonderful moments, more than I can count, but I can say that such are always related with my son, my family, my business and my people. God has been very good to me, and this is my major motivation to do what I do every day. This is how I give thanks.” |
